What are the Different Licence Classes in WA?

There are a few steps all drivers must take on their journey to getting a full driver's licence in WA. You’ll need to pass two tests for your learner's licence. Then there’s the red P plate and the green P plate before you’re a fully qualified driver!

Learner Licence

A learner's driving licence allows you to learn how to drive under supervision. You can apply for a learner licence at 16 after passing a road rules knowledge test. Novice drivers must carry their learner's permit at all times when driving.

Provisional Licence

Class P1

To pass the driving test with more confidence, book a driving lesson in Western Australia

Class P2

  • Provisional licence holders must be at least 18 years old.
  • Hold a P1 licence for at least 1 year.

Full Licence

  • Licence holders must be at least 19 years old.
  • Hold a P2 licence for at least 1 year.
  • No additional restrictions beyond standard road rules.

L Plate Restrictions WA

Speed Limit: Maximum 100 km/h.

Supervision: Must be supervised by a fully licensed driver at all times. Learner permit drivers can’t drive within the boundaries of Kings Park or wherever signs prohibit learner drivers.

Plates: Must display L plates on the vehicle.

Passengers: No restrictions as long as one of the passengers is the supervisor.

Blood Alcohol Concentration: 0.0%.

Demerit Points: No more than three points can be accumulated.

Mobile Devices: Prohibited.

Car Types: No restrictions.

Transmission Types: No restrictions.

Towing Restrictions: Learner plate drivers are permitted to tow as long as they abide by other L plate rules

P1 Restrictions WA

Speed Limit: Maximum 100 km/h.

Supervision: None required. 

Plates: Must display red P plates.

Passengers: No restrictions as long as one of the passengers is the supervisor. P plate holders are not permitted to drive between midnight and 5 am. 

Blood Alcohol Concentration: 0.0%.

Demerit Points: A maximum of three points if you’ve had your licence for a year.

Mobile Devices: Prohibited to use a mobile phone.

Car Types: High-performance vehicle restrictions apply.

Transmission Types: No restrictions.

Towing Restrictions: Prohibited to tow a trailer in the first six months.

P2 Restrictions WA

Speed Limit: Maximum 100 km/h.

Supervision: None required.

Plates: Must display green P plates.

Passengers: No restrictions.

Blood Alcohol Concentration: Zero blood alcohol concentration

Demerit Points: You can have a maximum of seven points between years one and two

Mobile Devices: Prohibited.

Car Types: No restrictions for provisional drivers

Transmission Types: No restrictions.

Towing Restrictions: Standard towing rules apply.
